Still leaking? Here are the solutions

As we said yesterday, we are here today to talk about waterproofing methods and their details in detail. In the previous article, we have mentioned a few methods. In addition to those methods, today's article will also tell you one more. Let's get straight to the topic without further ado.

01. Cementitious type - Cementitious is waterproofing using a material that binds well on any cement surface. This is to prevent water leakage by applying a thin chemical layer on the relevant surface. This chemical layer often contains some amount of cement. That is one of the reasons why it is called cementitious. Always use a brush to apply this chemical. Before applying this, the surface should be prepared. The entire surface should be washed thoroughly and the pits should be removed as much as possible. In addition, a special preparation should be made for the whole that is at 90° (mostly where the wall and the slab meet). A curved face needs to be prepared. It is called filleting. A 5mm plaster should be applied to cover the brick wall. This type of waterproofing material has to be applied twice or four times. It depends on the brand used. This is used for interior rooms and bathroom toilets. For safety here, plaster has to be cut above the chemical layer.

02. Bitumen membrane - In this, a carpet made by mixing bitumen and other materials is used or a sheet is used to cover the entire surface. One side of this sheet is heated and it is pasted on the surface. Before sticking, clean the surface thoroughly, fill the gaps and apply a primer. It is also a mixture of tar. This method is used on concrete surfaces. It is mostly used for places with a large area like basements and roof slabs. Before applying the primer, it is very good if the concrete surface is well dried. When sticking two sheets, stick about 100mm so that they fall on top of each other to prevent leakage between the sheets. This method is quite expensive and time-consuming. Also, this is an outdated method that many countries in the world are removing from use. Also, some sheet brands have stopped production at this time. But in our country, this is used for roof slabs and basements in many buildings. When using sheets, a fillet should be made and it is made with an inclination of 45°. For this, a chip concrete layer is used as a protective layer.

03. Crystalline type - This method is a modern method of waterproofing. It is used only on concrete surfaces. In this, this chemical liquid is applied on the surface using spayer or brush. The applied liquid should be cured for about a day. Then the chemical liquid enters inside through the concrete surface. It enters and creates a layer like a laminate layer inside the concrete. In fact, this liquid turns into crystals by covering the cracks in the concrete. That is why this method is called crystalline. The 4th method (sprayed) mentioned in the previous article, this crystalline method has been improved and made to be sprayed. This cannot be applied on the surface of bricks or blocks. A cementitious material must be used for this.

The latest method that is still popular in Sri Lanka is waterproofing with a silicone coating. After applying this, it looks like rubber. It can be applied using a brush or sprayer. A layer of elasticity is used on the slab. Suppose that a crack occurs in the slab after using this method. But water does not leak through the crack. Even if there is a crack, the waterproofing layer is not damaged due to its elasticity. This is the main advantage of this.

No matter which method is used, the slab will be waterproofed to the required height. If it is not a bathroom, this height will be about 300 mm. In the membrane method, the sheet is pasted at the same height. In other methods, a cementitious material has to be used. Bathrooms should be waterproofed to a height of 2100 mm. For all these methods, a concrete or plaster layer is mandatory as a protective cover.
